I just love the romance of the highlands, and love learning about the history of those ancient times as I do research for my new series, it's so fascinating.
For instance, did you know that it was illegal to wear a kilt? Wait ...what??
It's true. Wearing any "Highland dress" - including a kilt was a serious crime and was banned in 1746 (the Dress Act). This was all part of an attempt to bring the clans under government control and stop the Jacobite separatist uprising.
So does that mean Kilts are illegal in Scottland?
Nope! The law was repealed in 1782, but by that time kilts and tartans were sadly no longer common Highland wear. 😢
So if you visit the highlands, don't expect to see the citizens walking about in kilts and tartans.
How interesting is THAT?
As I said, I just love the history and romance of the highlands.
