Exploring Edinburgh’s gems (see below for details about each pic). Started in picturesque Dean Village, moved on to New Town, The Royal Botanic Gardens, and back to Old Town for a Haunted Tour. Pics are Dean Village, The Royal Mile, The Writer’s Museum, Greyfriar’s Bobby, Auld Reekie’s Adrian in Greyfriar’s Graveyard.
Another amazing example of how cool architecture can be….small building but still beautiful in design. This is Miller Row where they milled stones for water mills.
The Royal Mile at dusk. It is light here until past 11pm and not dark for very long
The Writer’s Museum in Lady Stairs Close. The Dowager Elizabeth, Countess of Stair (a place, not actual steps) lived here in the early 1700’s. The museum features Scotland’s 3 most famous writers, Robert Louis Stephenson, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. I was here for the architecture and the writers museum!
Greyfriar’s Bobby is famous in Edinburgh as the Skye terrier who guarded his masters grave for 14 years in the nearby graveyard. When Bobby passed he was not allowed to be buried beside his owner (very strict rules about animals and humans not sharing graveyards!) so he is said to lie here. A business man erected this drinking fountain (upper tier for humans, lower level for dogs) as a memorial. It is said you must rub Bobby’s nose for good luck.
Auld Reekie Haunted Vaults and Graveyard Tour. Tour guide Adrian taking us through Greyfriar’s Kirkyard before we descended beneath the city into hidden vaults. Edinburgh has a very dark side to its history, including more recent events like the teens who broke into this mausoleum in 2015, practiced a little necrophilia, used a skull for footie and then were arrested.
